Court lighting update: there's light at the end of the tunnel
For safety reasons the University has removed 11 light poles from the UQ Tennis Centre (next to courts 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 14, 16 and A). These poles were badly corroded at the base and could have snapped off and fallen (as did happen to a similar light pole at the swimming pool last week).
The University has installed 9 temporary light towers. These are powered by diesel generators so they are a little noisy but the alternative is darkness and no Tennis. This is sufficient to provide lighting on 9 courts (7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16 & A). The light poles on courts B, C, D & E are not a problem so these courts are still available. This leaves 6 courts unusable at night. The University will not be installing any more temporary lighting.
At this stage, it is not known when the new light poles will be installed. The University has indicated it could be 2-3 months.
Therefore, there are now sufficient courts available for: UQ Monday Night Fixtures UQ Thursday Night Fixtures Tuesday Night Practice Sessions Super Spring Tournament Series
However, there are not enough lights at present for Thursday Night Social Tennis. It looks as though Thursday Night Social Tennis will not be able to resume until late October (when the UQ Thursday Night Fixtures finish) unless the new light poles are installed sooner than expected.
Also, there will not be enough courts on some nights for all the BNTA Fixture teams so some teams in BNTA Fixtures will be playing their ‘home’ matches at other centres at various times. Any teams affected by this will be notified on a competition by competition basis.
