The second weekend of the 2012 University Open Tennis Championships was badly affected by overnight rain which delayed the start of play on both Saturday and Sunday.

However, it could have been a lot worse as rain periods were forecast for Saturday.  In fact, after play started each day, there was no more rain and matches were back on schedule within a few hours except where a few long matches held up later matches involving some of the same players.  The entire weekend’s schedule was completed except for one follow-on doubles match.

The Quarter-Finals of the Open Men’s Singles (OMS) and the Open Ladies’ Singles (OLS) have now been completed.

In the OLS Q/Fs, RENEE BINNIE d Andjela Djokovic [8] 6/4 2/6 7/6, SHAWNEE-ANN BRELSFORD d Charlotte Fuller [4] 5/7 6/3 4/0 rtd, ELIZABETH JAMES [3] d Stefanie Tan [6]  6/1 7/6 and EBONY PANOHO [2] d Cassie Gramlick [5] 7/5 6/4.

In the OMS Q/Fs, LUKE GERRY d Isaac Frost [1] 6/4 6/4, LOGAN MACKENZIE [5] d Gavin Van Peperzeel [3] 7/6 6/3, ROBERT SMEETS [4] d Luke Morland 6/0 6/2 and TOMAS WILLIS d Brendan Moore [2] 6/2 6/4.

Those still at the courts late on Sunday afternoon were fortunate to witness a great Open Men’s Doubles match between Ethan Wilkinson & Nick Northcott (2009 Open Men’s Doubles Champions) and Gareth Keating (1995 18/U Boys’ Singles Champion) & Ciaran Moore.  This was a cracker of a match with great reflex volleying by all players.  The match finished under lights, with Keating & Moore just scrapping home in a match-deciding tie-break 6/4 6/7 (10/8).

The Semi-Finals of the Open Men’s Singles and Open Ladies’ Singles will be played this Saturday morning (21 July).

The Semi-Final matches are: Luke Gerry v Logan MacKenzie, Robert Smeets v Tomas Willis, Renee Binnie v Shawnee-Ann Brelsford and Elizabeth James v Ebony Panoho.

If all goes to schedule, the Final of the Open Ladies’ Singles will be played at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday (22 July), followed by the Final of the Open Men’s Singles at 11 a.m.
