2011 Uni Open - Week 1 News
The 2011 University Open Tennis Championships started last weekend (9-10 July) with the non-ranking events and the Qualifying rounds for the Open Men’s Singles.
Club members figured prominently in the first weekend’s play
The A Grade Ladies’ Singles was won by GEESKE PEETERS with ASHLEY WILKINSON runner-up.
ASHLEY WILKINSON & GARY JONES won the A Grade Mixed Doubles and ATSUKO NAKAMURA (with Brett Young) won the B Grade Mixed Doubles.

TIFFANY VASSALLO & CRAIG LAM won the C Grade Mixed Doubles with BRIDGET SMITH & MICHAEL HUMPHRY runners-up.
REIKO SHOJI is through to the Final of the Special Ladies’ Singles and JASON CUNNINGHAM (with Seth Stirling) is through to the Final of the Special Men’s Doubles.
The initial rounds of the big Singles Round-Robins were also played with the group winners going through to the Finals on the third weekend of the tournament.
Group winners from the Club were CHRISTIAN CORTES, GARY JONES & COLIN PRINCE (A Grade Men’s Singles); RYAN CARSON, PETER CHALY & AYMAR GOULLET DE RUGY (B Grade Men’s Singles); and AARON HICKS, PAUL HYDE & JOSHUA RAYNER (C Grade Men’s Singles).
There are only a few Round-Robins this weekend (16-17 July) as most of the courts will be needed for the major ranking events.
32 players are contesting the Main Draw of the Open Men’s Singles. The top seeds are Jared Easton (1), Mark Draper (2), Josh Barrenechea (3) and Robert Smeets (4).
31 players entered the Open Ladies’ Singles. The top seeds are Ashling Sumner (1), Nao Hibino (2), Stefanie Tan (3) and Rachel Tredaux (4).
