2010 Rebound Ace University Open Tennis Championships Results
The 2010 Rebound Ace University Open Tennis Championships, played at the University of Queensland Tennis Centre (St Lucia, Brisbane) on 10-11, 17-18 & 24-25 July, have now concluded.
Despite some misty rain on the final afternoon causing a few problems with the last few Finals, the final match of the tournament (in the C Grade Men’s Singles Round-Robin Final) was completed just before the heavens opened and the courts were saturated.
Michael Look and Shannon Golds won the Open Singles Titles at this year’s University Open. To win his first University Open Singles Title, Look romped through the first three rounds but then had tough matches to defeat John James (Champion in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 & 2007) in the Semi-Final and Mark Draper (Champion in 1993, 2008 & 2009) in the Final. Golds crushed all her opponents to win her first University Open Singles Title for the loss of just six games.
68 players contested the Open Men’s Singles. In the Final, Michael Look defeated Mark Draper 7-6 2-6 6-2. Look, the No. 1 Seed, reached the Final by defeating Tom Howard 6-0 6-0, George Wall 6-0 6-2, Jonathon Knowlman 6-3 6-0, Steven De Waard 6-1 6-1 (Quarter-Final) and John James 7-6 6-4 (Semi-Final). Draper, the No. 3 Seed and defending champion, reached the Final by defeating Trent Schmith 6-1 6-0, Spencer Hegedus 6-0 6-0, Harry Bell 6-2 6-2, Philip Janz 6-3 6-0 (Quarter-Final) and Hugh Clarke 6-3 6-3 (Semi-Final).
28 players entered the Open Ladies’ Singles. In the Final, Shannon Golds (No. 1 Seed) defeated Ashling Sumner (No. 2 Seed) 6-0 6-1. Golds reached the Final by defeating Jessica Porter 6-0 6-2, Kristy Sinclair 6-1 6-0 (Quarter-Final) and Cassie Gramlick 6-2 6-0 (Semi-Final). Sumner, the defending Champion, reached the Final by defeating Monique Krutak 7-6 6-3, Shannon Beckett 6-3 6-0 (Quarter-Final) and Jacqui Bell 6-1 6-2 (Semi-Final).
The University Open, Brisbane’s largest Open Tournament, is organized by The University of Queensland Tennis Club. The tournament was played over six days with 300 individual players competing in 37 events for over $10,000 in prizemoney, trophies and prizes. The tournament had its lowest entry in thirty years as clashes with the Noosa Open (first weekend), North Queensland Open (middle weekend), Ingham Open (final weekend), Queensland Junior ITF Shaw Park International (middle Saturday) and the Queensland Junior ITF International 2 (middle Sunday) had a huge effect on Open and Junior entries.
