UQ Women Win Intervarsity Tennis

The UQ Women’s Tennis Team broke a 37-year drought when it won the Tennis competition at the 2024 UniSport Nationals.

The 2024 UniSport Nationals were held in Canberra, ACT, from 7 to 13 September.  Over 6,000 participants from around Australia battled it out to be crowned national champions in 30 different sports.  The Tennis competition was played at Tennis World Canberra. 

UQ defeated The University of Sydney 3-2 in the Women’s Final.  The UQ Women’s Tennis Team consisted of Ashley Gilby, Chyi Lee, Anja Nayar, Anastasia Polach and Laura Wang. 

This is UQ’s first win in the Women’s Intervarsity Tennis since Elissa Burke, Melinda Coburn, Christine Cunningham, Jane Gaydon & Rachel Thomson won in 1987.  UQ has now won the women’s national championship 5 times – in 2024, 1987, 1961, 1960 and 1956.

The UQ Men’s Tennis Team (Oscar Chan, Irvin Fung, Elliott James and Derian Valcourt) finished 7th.  UQ has won the Men’s Intervarsity Tennis 9 times (in 2017, 2003, 1998, 1994, 1993, 1984, 1983, 1956 & 1953).
