Lights, Action!

Court A - the last light installation being completed
At last - all the lights are working

Last night (22 April, 2025), all the lights at the UQ Sport Tennis Centre were working for the first time since February, 2022.

With all the new lights installed:

  • Monday Night Team Fixtures are running
  • Tuesday Night Team Fixtures are running
  • the June Monday Night Singles Fixtures will go ahead
  • Wednesday Night Tennis Practice is running
  • Thursday Night Social Tennis is running
  • the Autumn Night Series Doubles Tournament will go ahead
  • the June Any-Gender Night Singles Tournament will go ahead

Running Tennis at UQ over the last three years has been a real roller coaster ride with programs having to be postponed, modified, run with restricted numbers, or cancelled depending on the court lighting situation. For the first half of 2024, no night programs were able to be run.  The installation of new LED lights began on 4 February this year and the project was completed yesterday.

Over the last few years, the Club has been in constant disaster-recovery mode as it has had to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, a flood, light pole failures, the failure of all the LED lights as well as the threat of a cyclone!

With all the lights working, the Club can once again provide a complete range of fantastic Tennis programs for the UQ and wider communities and start to rebuild its membership base.
