The UQ Sport Tennis Centre is currently closed for major night programs because new lights are being installed on 17 of the courts. The lighting installation work started on 4 February and was scheduled to be completed by 3 March.
Installation work looks to be reasonably on track with the new lights now expected to be installed on 16 courts by 6 March. However, a light audit will then need to be completed before the courts will be open for hire. This means 19 courts should be available very soon, with the delivery of additional light fittings being required to get the last 2 courts operational.
There is likely to be a final disruption when the power has to be shut down to all the courts, the clubhouse and the change rooms for the main switchboard to be removed and replaced.
Although the end to the lighting problems is imminent, the uncertainty about the project completion date makes it impossible to determine definite restart dates for night programs just yet.
Because of the lighting situation, the only programs currently running are:
Sunday Afternoon Social Tennis (every Sunday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.)
Match & Mix Ladies’ Social Tennis (once a month, next session – Sunday, 2 March, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.)
Team Night Fixtures (2 competitions on Monday or Tuesday nights for 7 weeks – scheduled to start on 7 & 8 April) – depends on lights being fixed in time
Singles Night Fixtures (2 Monday nights, 16 & 23 June, 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.)
Saturday Night Tournaments (next event – Autumn Mixed Doubles Tournament, Saturday night, 15 March, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.) – depends on lights being fixed in time
Wednesday Night Tennis Practice (every Wednesday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) – will restart when lights fixed
Thursday Night Social Tennis (every Thursday, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.) – will restart when lights fixed
